PhD position in Experimental Physics

Department of Physics at Umeå University, Sweden is going to announce a Ph.D. position for a project on 2D and graphene-related materials for energy storage applications.

Project description.

 We are looking for candidates interested in research on graphene-related materials,  for energy storage applications. The research is part of a project is aimed at the development of new graphene-related materials, dispersions based on these materials, deposition of electrodes, and evaluation of supercapacitor’s energy storage parameters. 

 The Ph.D. student will be engaged in the synthesis of various new carbon materials with a particular focus on porous high surface area conductive graphene-related composites suitable for the preparation of electrodes for supercapacitors. Characterization of materials will be performed using X-ray diffraction, Raman and IR spectroscopy, TGA/DSC etc. It is also planned to use synchrotron radiation facilities and neutron scattering methods for fundamental studies of graphene-related materials.  The project will be closely related to research performed within EU Graphene Flagship for energy storage applications. 

Competence requirements

Previous experience and competence with carbon materials (graphene, graphite oxide, carbon nanotubes) and electrochemical characterization of supercapacitors is not obligatory but is an advantage. The applicant should be motivated, dedicated to working towards an aim, and have a good ability to work with mainly experimental assignments both independently and in a research group.

  M.S./M.Phil. in Physics, Chemistry or Material Science or similar qualifications is a requirement. A good level of written and spoken English is a requirement. 

As a Ph.D. student, you will perform research, study Ph.D. courses, and participate in undergraduate education. The objective of a Ph.D. student position is to obtain a Ph.D. degree. The time period for the position is limited to four years. The position may also include part-time work (up to 20%) as a teaching assistant. If so, the total time for the position is extended accordingly (up to a maximum of five years).

  The position is full-time employment with the expected start of work in August-September  2021.
